60 seconds with Karol McCusker, Scott Wilson

Senior civil engineer at ACE member firm Scott Wilson and chairman of ACE Progress Network in Northern Ireland

What's your favourite part of the job?

When you see your design go from a drawing to completion on site, and the public or client begin to see the benefits of the scheme.

And the least favourite part?
It would have to be the accounting side of things, but it’s a necessary evil.

Favourite food and drink?
Pizza from Domino's BBQ chicken - other pizza companies are available - and a pint of Guinness.

Sports, hobbies and pastimes?
Rowing, both sculling and sweep.

If you had to pick another profession what would it be?
I'd probably choose to be a barrister.

Biggest personal inspiration?

Seeing how many engineers just want to get on with the scheme and set aside past differences and the previous schemes.

Money no object, ideal place to live?

New York.

What are your ambitions within the industry?
Within Scott Wilson I would have to say get Geoff French or Hugh Blackwood's job. But I'd also like to start my own practice.

How do you feel ACE helps young professionals working in the consultancy and engineering sector?
ACE helps to develop a “rounded”  professional - that is to say, an engineer who not only has the technical skills but also the business management skills that are needed in today’s climate.
