Norfolk MP to press DECC on home improvements

A Norfolk MP says he will press the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) on tax breaks for energy-saving home improvement products.

Norwich Evening News reports that Tory George Freeman met with industry figures, including Brett Amphlett of the Builders Merchants Federation, to discuss the current climate.

They expressed concern that high VAT rates on energy-saving measures are putting people off going green by having heat pumps, solar panels and biomass boilers installed.

This is something that Mr Freeman said he would address.

He told the paper: "I am very sympathetic to the argument that we may need to look at tax breaks for energy-efficient home-improvement products and I will be discussing this with ministers from the DECC."

The government's 'Green Deal' framework launches in October this year with the aim of incentivising home improvements by taking away upfront costs to the consumer.

It is estimated that the Green Deal could support at least 65,000 insulation and construction jobs by 2015.
